How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants are designed to be a replacement, serving the same function, as the root of a tooth. The implants are small titanium devices similar to screws, which are inserted into the bone below the gumline. After several months, when the implant heals, then, on top of the implant, an abutment and permanent porcelain or ceramic crown are placed. The implanted tooth is made to be indistinguishable from your other teeth, so it looks completely natural.

When Are Dental Implants the Ideal Solution?

Dental implants are often considered the best solution because they are permanent. Once properly installed, a dental implant is not different, in terms of both function and appearance, from your other teeth. Additionally, dental implants can help keep the bone tissue healthy and strong compared to dentures or bridges, where the bone tissue may degrade slowly over time.

Replacing Multiple Teeth — While one dental implant can be performed, many patients have more than one tooth missing, so a multiple implant can provide a good replacement mechanism. In these situations, not every missing tooth requires an implant because implant teeth may act as supports for fixed bridgework. A common scenario is if three teeth are are missing in a row, then two implants, one on either side of the gap is all that’s needed because a crown in between will fill the gap that has no implant underneath. That avoids using any natural teeth as bridge supports, which could weaken more susceptible to decay overtime.

Replace All Teeth Permanently — Dental implants are frequently used to support an entire arch of upper or lower replacement teeth. Unlike dentures, dental implants are fixed into the mouth and are never removed. This offers another example of using far fewer implants than missing teeth. In some cases, the new teeth replacements can be supported by as little as 4 implants. In cases where jawbone deterioration in volume and density have occurred, 5 or 6 implants might be required to support a row of 10, 11, or 12 teeth. However, even in these cases, dental implant replacement teeth are likely to protect your jawbone, are permanent and won’t slip, and usually last a lifetime with proper care.

What Is The Process for Implant Restoration?

To insert your dental implant, Dr. Miller uses a network of implant specialists.  who will give you a local anesthetic so you can’t feel the procedure while it’s happening.

First, after receiving a local anesthetic so you can’t feel the procedure while it’s happening, any part of old teeth, which are being replaced, are removed. Second, after making sure Gum tissues surrounding the implant area are sturdy, a small incision is made and a small hole for the implant is drilled into your jawbone. Third, the implant is placed. Lastly, an X-ray is made to ensure that the implant is in the correct place and is sturdy.

The entire procedure often takes less than an hour. However, after a few months waiting period, which allows the implant to fuse with your jawbone, you’ll need to return to Community Dental Group, so Dr. Miller can place your new crown(s).

During your follow-up appointment, Dr. Miller examines the gums to make sure there is no recession and that the implant is secure.
